104-Year-Old Time Capsule Discovered During Demolition Surprises Minnesotans

Residents of Owatonna, Minnesota were thrilled to take part in a historic event when construction workers discovered a 104-year-old time capsule on Monday. The workers found a silver box in the rubble of a demolition project at Owatonna High School, as they were demolishing the front pillars and doors. The capsule, buried in 1920 in the high school’s cornerstone, contained items such as a roster of teachers and administrators, a copy of the high school newspaper, three local newspapers, and other documents.
The discovery was made public when the box was opened in the presence of local officials. The items found in the time capsule will be preserved and some will be displayed at the school while others will be added to the collections of the Steele County Historical Society. Owatonna High School Principal Cory Kath expressed excitement about the preservation of the time capsule and the opportunity to share its contents with the community.
